Sometimes difficult experiences continue to affect us long after they are over. You may logically know you are safe now, yet still feel emotionally stuck, overwhelmed, reactive, anxious, disconnected, or constantly “on edge.”
EMDR therapy is one approach that can help the brain and nervous system process experiences that may feel unresolved so they no longer carry the same emotional intensity.
At Healthy Connections Counseling, EMDR is offered within a warm, collaborative, and trauma-informed therapy relationship. My goal is not to rush your healing or “fix” you, but to help you feel more grounded, connected, and supported as we work through experiences at a pace that feels manageable for your nervous system.
We provide EMDR therapy in Millcreek, Utah and online across Utah for teens, young adults, and adults.
What Is EMDR Therapy?
EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing.
EMDR is a research-supported therapy approach designed to help the brain process and integrate distressing experiences that may feel “stuck” or unresolved.
When overwhelming experiences occur, the nervous system sometimes stores them in a way that keeps the body and brain reacting as though the experience is still happening in the present. EMDR helps support the brain’s natural processing system so those memories and experiences can begin to feel less activating, overwhelming, or emotionally charged over time.
EMDR often includes forms of bilateral stimulation such as eye movements, tapping, or alternating audio tones while working through thoughts, emotions, memories, or body sensations connected to an experience.
EMDR May Help With:
Trauma and PTSD
Anxiety and chronic stress
Panic attacks
Negative self-beliefs
Childhood experiences and family-of-origin wounds
Emotion regulation difficulties
Grief and loss
Shame and self-criticism
Relationship patterns
Medical trauma or difficult life experiences
Performance anxiety
Feeling emotionally “stuck”
Nervous system overwhelm
You do not need to have experienced a single major traumatic event for EMDR to be helpful. Many people seek EMDR therapy for experiences that felt emotionally overwhelming, invalidating, or difficult to process over time.
What Does EMDR Therapy Feel Like?
Many people are surprised to learn that EMDR is not about reliving every detail of painful experiences.
Instead, EMDR therapy focuses on helping your brain and nervous system process experiences in a way that feels more integrated and less emotionally overwhelming.
Some sessions may involve:
noticing thoughts, emotions, or body sensations
identifying patterns or beliefs that developed over time
using bilateral stimulation
strengthening feelings of safety, grounding, and regulation
building internal resources and coping skills
EMDR looks different for each person. Therapy moves at a pace that considers your comfort, readiness, and nervous system capacity.
A Relational & Trauma-Informed Approach
I believe healing happens best in environments where people feel emotionally safe, understood, and supported.
My approach to EMDR is relational, collaborative, and grounded in understanding the nervous system. I often integrate elements of:
attachment-focused work
nervous system support
parts work/internal experiences
mindfulness and grounding
body awareness
practical coping strategies
Therapy is not about being “too much,” “too emotional,” or needing to have everything figured out before beginning. You are welcome to show up as you are.
EMDR Therapy for Teens, Young Adults, & Adults
I work with:
teens navigating anxiety, overwhelm, identity development, or difficult experiences
young adults feeling stuck, disconnected, burned out, or emotionally overwhelmed

Sessions are tailored to each individual’s goals, experiences, and comfort level.
